Miami Fishing Report

June/July Report

Summer conditions are in full effect with warm temperatures espeicially after mid-day, and the high chance of an afternoon thunderstorm. Summer conditions are also in effect for fishing the flats of Flamingo and Biscayne Bay. At Flamingo this means slick calm mornings that offer great opportunities at sight fishing for tailing Redfish. Expect shots at fish that range from 4 to 12 lbs. and are eager to take a well-cast fly or jerkbait. On 06/23/07, with two fine anglers from Canada, James Sydney and Jeanette Ewen, we encountered a nice school or reds with probably 100 to 200 fish in it! We got into position and quickly landed a nice 8 pounder on fly. Came around on the school again and landed another red around 5 pounds. Due to the sharks in the area we left in search of snook. Snook fishing was good, with a combination of blind-casting potholes and throwing at fish we could see.

We went 4 for 5 with our biggest fish weighing close to 10 lbs. While snook fishing, we came across a single tarpon in a 1 1/2 ft. of water that was slowly trying to ambush mullet. After a stealthy pursuit we managed to get a fly in front of him and he gladly obliged us with a slurp of a top secret tarpon pattern. The fish started to take off and then came right back at the boat which all we could do was back pedal when a green tarpon decides to come directly at you in shallow water. As he turned to take another run our fly came free and our hearts dropped. The fish was probably in the 80 lb. class.

With tarpon on the brain we decided to try a spot that offers good shots at smaller fish along a mangrove shoreline. These fish readily take flies as long as they see them. We were quickly rewarded with about a 10 lb. fish and ended up hooking several more. For the record, between now and through September fishing for small tarpon and some large ones too will be excellent out of Flamingo. Great fish for fly or light tackle. This was a good day, especially considering we were throwing nothing but flies. On 06/25/07, with Mike O'Conner and his son Shane, I did trip using a combination of artificials and live bait and hammered the snook, redfish, and landed about a 30 lb. tarpon. So yeah the weather is warm but the fishing out of Flamingo is red hot!

In Biscayne Bay, the bonefishing has been solid as well. The same James Sydney who I mentioned earlier fished with me on 06/21/07 out of Key Biscayne. He landed two nice bones of 5 and 7 lbs. on fly by noon. He also landed a small shark and had shots at Permit and Tarpon. This will be the norm with the best fishing coming early and late in the day. Nightfishing for tarpon and snook out of Miami is excellent this time of year as well and is something to consider if time is limited and you are coming to Miami or Miami Beach for a short stay. So if your looking to get bent and have a good time give me a call. Capt. Mike
